The Leap

What is one thing you did today that was brave?

The way I imagined Bravery as a child is very different than the way I see it today. To be Brave looked so easy in the fictional worlds I immersed myself in, worlds where Right and Wrong were as clear as Night and Day, Black and White, Apples and Oranges. Adult World is terribly confusing, what with all the subjectivity, complexity, and Fake News messing up the order of things. It’s no wonder that even as adults, we find solace in the stories of superheroes triumphing over supervillains in perpetual battles of Good and Evil where, much to the viewer’s relief, there is no ambiguity about which side you belong on.

I do not view the world through a lens of Good and Evil, or Right and Wrong, or Darkness and Light. That is what this blog is about. This blog is about all the messy stuff that break down the bully pulpits on either side of any argument and force a conversation in the middle. This blog is about empathy. This blog is about being brave enough to listen, to be patient with people you disagree with, to act on your beliefs even when they aren’t what others think they should be.

I recognize that I am venturing into dangerous territory. Who puts such incendiary content into their first blog post? How is your version of judgment better than mine? And who doesn’t like the Avengers franchise? The answer to all of these questions, and more, is Bravery.* This risk-averse millennial is serving up a healthy entree of tolerance in this food fight we call 2019. It will get messy, but it will also leave you fulfilled.

So think for a moment about a risk you took today. Did it work out for you? How did others fair? Was it worth it?

Will you try again tomorrow?

Yes, yes I will.

*The answer to the last question, about the Avengers, is actually not Bravery. The answer is no one.
